SO, WHICH IS BETTER? Strict Search Engine Optimization or Search Engine Marketing?

What they shouldn’t do, though, is rely strictly on PPC long-term and not address organic SEO, since it’s proven that PPC performance is dwindling as we get smarter as creatures of search. There are many situations when PPC makes sense. For example, if a new company was launching their first website and initial online footprint, they’re likely going to need some immediate visibility in search until they build up some organic credibility since this process takes time. With a strategic PPC campaign, they’d be able to achieve this.

Organic SEO is also less costly long-term as you establish search credibility, as long as you maintain it with the consistent creation of quality content and social media usage.

Advocates on either side could argue one is better than the other; as an Inbound Marketer I have bias for the organic SEO approach but as I’ve outlined, true SEM still incorporates the use of organic SEO.

Now, I don’t agree this to be true, I believe everyone seems to think they are experts, so they say it in hopes the person they are speaking to will agree. Want to know the best way to find a true expert in SEO? This is probably the easiest field to find an expert in. We’ll use Law Firm SEO as an example. Try this, just search in Google for something like “Law Firm SEO Expert” if their site comes up then they clearly pass that test. It’s funny people reach out to me all the time telling me that they are SEO experts, so I ask them, “ok, what do you rank for?” And they say nothing. They claim they are experts believing that will get them the deal, until the person is smart enough to answer a simple question like that.

But that was too easy, so we’ll dive a little deeper. First of all, what makes an expert an expert? Knowledge clearly. But how do you gain knowledge? Through the investment in education and gaining real experience. If you talk to lawyers and you ask them how much time and money did you invest in your education, they would say years and thousands maybe even hundreds of thousands. Now if you ask them, how long they’ve been a lawyer, I’m sure you’d hope for at least a few years and not a few weeks. 

Same holds true in all aspects, the more valuable the profession, the more they should have invested in their education, don’t you agree. I’m sure you don’t want a doctor operating on you with their extent of education being they watched a lot of Dr. Oz on TV.

Another thing I would look for, but is much more difficult is their ability to adapt. The world is always changing so just because someone is an expert for a long time, if there are dramatic changes in the industry and they don’t adapt are they still experts? I would say no, wouldn’t you?

Marketing is a big one, lots of people are self proclaimed marketing experts. I’ve had cases of people calling themselves marketing experts but don’t believe in the power of social media marketing. That’s just insane, maybe they were experts before, but if they haven’t learned to market on platforms that have the attention of hundreds of millions of people, they are no where near experts.

To recap, here are 3 things to look for to prove someone’s expertise:

  1. How much have they invested in their education. (especially if it is something you deem to be very valuable.)
  2. How much experience do they have. Do they have years of experience, or lots of occasions that they’ve worked on?
  3. Do they adapt to the environment. If they’re a marketing expert, have they adapted to the massive changes in marketing in the last 5 years or so.
